Nestled in rural Pennsylvania, the Woolrich woolen mills have been pumping out quality woolen goods since the early nineteenth century, making the brand the oldest continous manufacturer of outdoor clothing in the United States. In the early s, John Rich — the son of a wool weaver — migrated to America from Liverpool, England. After initially settling in Philadelphia, Rich moved to the more rural, central sector of Pennsylvania, using his knowledge of the wool industry to rent and operate a small woolen mill in Mill Hall, PA. After saving adequate funds, Rich relocated again, this time to the nearby rural micro-community of Plum Run, where he joined his business partner Daniel McCormick to build his first woolen mill and founded the Woolrich brand in With logging and timber the main source of income in these rural regions, Woolrich brand goods were perfect for keeping workers warm in the harsh Pennsylvania winters. The pair bought acres of land in the new location, building a sawmill that would provide enough timber for a new woolen factory and log houses for its workers. This new mill required a large number of employees, so Rich built houses around it, creating a whole new township which would later become officially known as Woolrich, Pennsylvania. Woolrich gained more and more prestige as the years went on, not only within the lumber industry, but with the military as they supplied the wool blankets essential to the survival of many Union soldiers during the American Civil War. Woolrich went on to produce workwear for the railroad workers of the early twentieth century, and American troops in the two world wars.

Woolrich Woolen Mills American. It has produced woolen goods for over years, including the heavy weight red and black plaid fabric, known by Woolrich as the “classic” hunting plaid, seen in this hunting ensemble worn by the sharp-dressing comedian Sid Caesar. Red has been used since the 19th century for hunting jackets, and plaid is also synonymous with outdoors wear. The wool field coat and pants have been produced by Woolrich for most of its years in business, and are executed with the warmth and comfort of the hunter in mind.

Besides the inherent warmth of the wool and its ability to wick away moisture, both pieces are outfitted with special details, like the “storm flap” which covers the button closure on the coat and protects the wearer from the elements seeping in between the holes, as well as the neck tab which keeps the collar up to warm the neck and face. The double seat and knees of the pants provides the extra support required for the sport, and the knit bands at the hem are a custom touch, allowing for boots to be comfortably worn over the pants.

The coordinating plaid coat and pants, coined the “Pennsylvania tuxedo” by Woolrich, while being completely functional, is also rather fashionable. Not on view. Public Domain. This artwork is meant to be viewed from right to left.

Also, the black stripe does not. The same, though, is true of the Red, which is lighter, in terms of volume and weight, than other models. I had also wanted to try them out in black and in white, however the tan base and black stripes on the red was too hard to put on or off, and that was the time to start from scratch, and that worked out well enough. Lately there has been a rise in interest in the Coyote Brown, as I did not have the opportunity to use the new red as far back at winter , but in the second half of , I used it as the main color for the black base of two of my winter models, which gave me a good feeling about this particular color choice.

In fact, the red on the Black was actually my greatest surprise of , and the difference in contrast between the red and black stripes made it even more visible than if it had been the only color in the pair which should be black. I would not say the Red is a perfect fit for me, but since it seems to me to look and feel great that is the real benefit of all this color choice , I am able to use it as a main and secondary color in my lineups. After all, the black is a bit lighter than the rest of the model, and I guess because of its weight.

When the weather was colder, or there was no need, the Black looked fantastic, especially when paired with the red. But, it is one of the nice surprises for me in that the Black has the advantage of not being a base color, but it does not have any stripes. However, in this model, it is not a real problem as both colors are used as base color anyway, especially on the lighter, more saturated parts of the shoe.

I found the black color to be very versatile, both in winter models and outdoor models. The black stripes on the red do actually give a bit of a contrast as compared to the Red, but not at the same level to the Black which is more saturated and in the same place.
